Ulcinj is the southernmost town in Montenegro on the border with Albania. The hotel receptionist where we stayed assured me that Cervantes had been imprisoned here not in Algiers as your translation of "Don Quixote" will tell you. He said the name of the Don's Dulcinea was derived from the Venetian name for Ulcinj, "Dolcigno", which I found in the church in the old city and the Italians refer to 'Porto d'Ulcino' and hence, I suppose, Ulcinj and the Albania 'Ulqin'. It is a remarkably beautiful little town. I swam there in the Adriatic on 13 October - much more fun than the North Sea on a hot July.
